What’s your back-up plan?

May 2 2007

It's true: most of the time, computer consultants have different opinions on things, like the best e-mail system, or the optimal way to configure a new web server. If you ask any three, you're likely to get four answers. However, if the question is "What is the most important purchase a business owner can make for their IT systems?", you'll hear the same resounding answer: "A good, comprehensive back-up solution!"

Imagine walking into the office one day to find that every piece of computer equipment were missing. It happens more often than you might think!

OK -- a couple of days go by and you have managed to stay afloat. You have filled out all the police reports, and insurance forms and have contacted your hardware vendor. Now you are sitting in the midst of boxes brimming full with new systems, equipment and gear. Now what?

Think about the process -- how long it will take to get everything back in order, with all the appropriate software installed, configured and working just as you and your office need it:

Do you have the software necessary to re-install everything?

How long will it take to get your data back on the systems and current?

How long will it take to reapply all the patches and updates?

How will all this down time affect your profitability?

How will your clients or customers perceive this down time?

What opportunities will be missed?

How much will this really cost you?

It all depends on how well prepared you are for such a situation. Creating a comprehensive disaster plan requires some thought and planning. Take the time now to understand and review your systems. It will pay off in the long run!
